Doesn't it make sense by saying Viele Tiere wohnen in dem Forst. I mean that the es seems not so necessary.

Wohnen is more used in tales and when the main actor are animals, but behave like humans. Then they are no animals anymore, they get treat like humans. Or if the targetgroup are children, then the people also are saying wohnen instead of leben

Manchmal komm ich mir hier schon vor wie aufn Gericht fuer Deutsche Rechtschreibung, wird man doch schon wegen einem kleinen Verschreiberling gelyncht.
