Wieso "hinter"?

"lǐ" bedeutet in diesem Zusammenhang "inside" aber nicht im Tor selber sondern in dem Bereich hinter dem Tor aber in der Stadt. Darum habe ich "hinter" verwendet.

"běimén" means north gate. The sentence means: "I'am inside the city behind the north gate."

Who can translate these sentences?: "Wǒ zài běimén lǐ (or wàibian) ne. Thank you very much.
It means "I'm at/inside (outside) the north gate/entrance". "ne" doesn't really have meaning other than to emphasize you are there at the moment/right now. Like 我在吃饭呢。I'm eating now.
