China’s Han Flock to Theme Parks Featuring Minorities
NYT.
"“There are many villages around, and they’re all primitive,” he said as a Han motorcycle club pulled up to Mr. Ai Yo’s house for lunch. “It’s not suitable for us to go there. They don’t speak the Han language. You can’t have exchanges with them.”
That kind of attitude puzzles Dai residents living right outside the park.
“The culture here is the same as inside the park,” said Ai Yong, 32, a rubber farmer in Mannao village. “You’re getting cheated inside. You come out here, you can see everything for free.”"

County government squeezes out community teachers
China Labour Bulletin. China, große Politik & kleine Umsetzung.
"They said a provincial investigation had uncovered the practice of replacing dismissed and retired teachers with unqualified casuals, known in Chinese as “black” (黑民办) community teachers, including escort girls, laid-off factory workers, forestry personnel, armed police college graduates and others. Moreover, although paid at an even lower rate than Yang and his colleagues (150 yuan a month), these casuals had, in many cases, bought their positions because they could later “pass” the teachers exam and be elevated to state school teacher status."

Hummer nicht nach China?
China's Tengzhong to address Hummer fate Sunday
AFP via Google.
"But the Wall Street Journal Tuesday quoted an unnamed source close to Tengzhong as saying the firm's application for approval seemed like it "isn't going anywhere"."

Oder doch?
China's Hummer buy may take private equity route
Washington Post.

Kodex gegen Korruption
FAZ.

Deepening Chinese Stakes in West Africa: The Case of Ghana
Jamestown Foundation.
"China benefits from importing natural resources and raw materials and exporting Chinese goods. Yet it is still unclear whether this model will work for all African countries or not. While Chinese investment could deliver a fortune for this country, it could also be a disaster."

Time to Worry about China?
Time, Blog.
"Too many economists out here seem to wish away some of the serious structural problems in China's economy. The prevailing attitude is that China is somehow more capable of dealing with such problems than other countries. I'm not convinced."

Neue Rubrik "Die Warnung der Woche".
China Warns U.S. Against Selling F-16s to Taiwan
NYT.
"Jin Canrong, a professor of international relations at People’s University in Beijing, said the United States should pay a price for weapon sales to Taiwan but acknowledged that China’s umbrage was largely part of a show aimed at soothing nationalist sentiment, both in the military and among ordinary Chinese."

Losing Google would hit Chinese science hard

"In the survey, 84 percent said losing Google would "somewhat or significantly" hamper their research and 78 percent said international collaborations would be affected."

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2010 ... 522102.htm" target="_blank
More than a dozen metropolitan newspapers covering 11 provinces in China have made a rare joint appeal for accelerating the reform of the country's household registration, or hukou, system in a co-signed editorial.

The editorial, published on Monday in 12 newspapers, said the household registration regulations issued in 1958 should be abolished as soon as possible.
On Sunday, Premier Wen Jiabao said during a webcast with netizens that China would advance the reform of its household registration system to solve problems for new-generation migrant workers.

But he also sounded a cautionary note, warning that the nation faced structural economic and social problems, and that China still confronts “a very complex situation” in the wake of last year’s global financial collapse.

China Says It Is Slowing Down Military Spending

China’s official military budget will rise by just 7.5 percent in 2010, a government spokesman said Thursday, a rate that is about half the official increase in recent years and the first to fall below 10 percent since 1989.

China to Launch Space Station Module in 2011

China’s Cyberposse

Human-flesh search engines — renrou sousuo yinqing — have become a Chinese phenomenon: they are a form of online vigilante justice in which Internet users hunt down and punish people who have attracted their wrath. The goal is to get the targets of a search fired from their jobs, shamed in front of their neighbors, run out of town. It’s crowd-sourced detective work, pursued online — with offline results.

Wanderarbeiter gesucht
FAZ.

A new battle for Confucius
Asia Times.
"with this work Johnston has provided new food for thought about the real traditions of Chinese culture, and here Mozi and his original book are particularly important. Mozi was Confucius' original antagonist and to his book we owe the first recognition of Confucians as a group of thinkers, although they were branded with a possibly derogatory word, ru, softies. Mozi devoted two chapters to expressly refuting the ideas of the Confucians."

Google says China's web censorship is a 'trade issue'
BBC.

China villagers moved to quench the urban thirst
BBC.
"what the state-controlled newspaper did not report was any of the family's numerous concerns or difficulties, problems they readily told the BBC when we visited."

China appoints Panchen Lama in tactical move to quell unrest
Independent.
"Last month he was voted vice-president of the nation's Buddhist Association, and the Xinhua news agency reported how he promised to "uphold the leadership of the Communist Party of China" and "adhere to socialism, safeguard national unification, strengthen ethnic unity and expand Buddhist exchanges"."

The worldwide war on baby girls
‘But that’s...murder...and you’re the police!’ The little foot was still now. The policemen held on to me for a few more minutes. ‘Doing a baby girl is not a big thing around here,’ [an] older woman said comfortingly. ‘That’s a living child,’ I said in a shaking voice, pointing at the slops pail. ‘It’s not a child,’ she corrected me. ‘It’s a girl baby, and we can’t keep it. Around these parts, you can’t get by without a son. Girl babies don’t count.’

China expects further Xinjiang separatist attacks
AP via Google.

Heavy security is the new normal in China's Tibet
AP via Google.
"Their presence is so common that people in Lhasa were startled last week when the uniformed patrols seemingly disappeared. In their place, fit young men with military crewcuts — some wearing yellow and black track suits — marched in groups. The reason: a rare visit to the tense Tibetan capital by foreign reporters arranged by the government."

Hilfe bei der Taxifahrt
Welt.

Dog's off menu
Global Times. Scheint, da will jemand das Ende herbeireden.

China Gigantische Neuverschuldung
SZ.

The Chinese hate the rich – and rightly so!
Marxist.com. :!:
"The destruction of the planned economy in China has created a massive and widening gap between rich and poor and at the same time a deep seated hatred against the new rich. According to a report in China Daily, a recent survey released by the Zhejiang Academy of Social Sciences found that “96 percent of the public said they feel resentful toward the rich.”"

Du sollst dein Vaterland ehren
Tagesspiegel.

Archaeologists amend the written history of China's first emperor
Physorg.
"as the saying goes, history is written by the winners. Ancient texts can contain inaccuracies favorable to a strong ruler's legacy. That's why two Field Museum scientists and their Chinese collaborator have integrated textual information with archaeological research in order to further understand the impact of Shihauangdi's reign."

Bo Xilai, China's most charismatic politician, makes a bid for power
Independent.
"It could be a sign that the "princelings" – the children of the 1949 Maoist revolutionaries – are gaining even more political traction in the Chinese power structure."

Expert: Horses in terracotta army 'castrated'
China Daily.
"All the 520 horses that pulled chariots in the terracotta army, unearthed from the mausoleum on the outskirts of Xi'an, capital of the northwestern Shaanxi province, had penises but no testes, said Yuan Jing, an archeologist with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
The situation varied, however, with the 116 cavalry horses, he said. "Some of them were castrated but many others were not.""

Ontslag Chinese skipper om 'USA-pet'
RTLNieuws.

Etwas OT:
