Business Plan

Business plans ? Syllabus

1. Goals

Preparing a business plan gives you an opportunity to put your knowledge of business together. It is hard work but a satisfying experience and may hopefully whet your entrepreneurial appetite. Preparing a business plan will develop your analytical thinking and give you practice in writing a convincing argument. It will hone your skills in research and report writing.

This course attempts to guide you through the process of preparing a business plan. Class work will be used to discuss what a business plan is and what distinguishes a good from a bad business plan. This will draw on what the guidebooks say and on an analysis of previous student business plans. This knowledge will then be applied by considering the Window Washer case study. You will receive feedback on your business plan from your peers in class and from your teacher individually.

In addition to the information you receive in class, you have been given a host of resources to help you in preparing your business plan. You may listen to entrepreneurs talk about their experiences, dip into the various web sites listed, and refer to the handouts related to the writing of your business plan.

The design of this course has been heavily influenced by the feedback from students who have taken this course in the past and the common problems they have faced in preparing business plans. In order to make this an even better experience, your comments are considered extremely important. I hope you will tell me which information, exercises, links, etc. you found useful or not useful and would appreciate hearing your suggestions for improvement.

2. Task

Your task is to prepare a professional and convincing business plan for a new venture in the hope of attaining 40% debt financing from a bank.

Considering that your business plan must be convincing, it is extremely important that you work through the numbers very early to make sure that your concept is viable. ?Viable? is open to interpretation. At the very least, it means that you should be able to live off your business. Getting an early start will allow you to test other ideas should your first idea appear unworkable or undesirable. Failure to come up with a ?viable? business concept will not be accepted as a reason for not handing in your business plan by the deadline. Another good reason for getting an early start is that preparing a business plan requires considerable research, thought and time to write up, if you want to do a good job. Many students in the past have commented that they underestimated the task and started their work far too late.

3. ?Rules of the game?

3.1 Your business idea requires instructor?s approval
Ultimately, your business plan is your own responsibility. I do reserve the right to exclude certain business ideas, for example, I will not accept business plans for restaurants, cafés and bars. Please check with me first before starting your research.

3.2 Page limitations
The main part of your business plan, excluding the title page and table of contents should not exceed 15 pages (double-spaced,12 pt). Text beyond this limit will not be considered. The appendices do not count in the 15-page limitation. They are, however, reserved for the financial statements.

3.3 Meetings and submission deadline
As you will see in the lesson plan, you have to meet with me to show me your business environment analysis. This meeting is compulsory but no marks will be assigned. Students who do not appear as scheduled with a reasonably complete business environment analysis will receive a mark of 5,0.

Business plans are to be submitted to me personally or to the secretary no later than 10.00 a.m. on 1 June 2005.

3.4 Property
The business plan you hand in will be kept by me and I reserve the right to use it or parts thereof for instructional purposes.

3.5 Plagiarism
Plagiarism in any form is strictly forbidden and will result in a mark of 5.0. You are advised to refer to the links on academic writing. I routinely check business plans for plagiarism. According to a resolution passed by the faculty of Department 2, students who plagiarize do not only fail the particular course in which the student has plagiarized, but all other courses in that semester. This rule also applies retroactively. That is, if plagiarism comes to a teacher?s attention after a mark has been granted, the mark will be changed to a fail and the student may lose all credits taken in that particular semester. You must include the dated and signed statement of originality in your business plan between the cover page and the table of contents.

4. Marking

Your final mark will be based entirely on the written business plan. Overall your business plan should be convincing. This means convincingly arguing for the need of your product in your particular market and showing how your product meets that need. To be thoroughly convincing you must also show that you have a good strategy, that your concept is sustainable, that you have the management team to be successful and that you have thought through the concept in detail. The financial section of your plan merely reflects the decisions you have made in your plan. A convincing business plan answers all the questions a reader may have and provides sufficient detail.

In order to be convincing you need to pay attention to the contents and presentation of the business plan and how it is written.

Contents (50 marks)
The contents will be evaluated according to the information included or not included, the quality of the information and the structuring of the information.

Is the information relevant? Is there any important information missing?
The information included should be relevant to the reader of your business plan. You must ask yourself what information your reader needs. Too much information is perhaps just as bad as too little as the reader does not have the time to waste. Also it shows that you don't know what is really important. You must put yourself in the banker's position and ask yourself if you have given her enough information to answer all her questions.

Is the information of high quality? Have I followed academic standards? Is my primary research sound?
The quality of the information refers to your sources and the quality of your primary research. Have you quoted reputable sources? Does your bibliography follow academic standards? Is the research you conducted sound? That is, have you contacted the right people? Is your sample size sufficient? Have you asked the right questions? etc. If you have to make estimates, have you stated your assumptions? Are your assumptions realistic?

Is my business plan well-structured? Have I included cross-references where necessary?
The information must be logically structured. Your reader does not have the time to hunt through your plan looking for information. Your plan must read like a story with one part leading to the next. Where you refer to another part of your plan, make sure to include cross-references with page numbers.

Obviously getting all three right is essential. Having the right kind of information is not sufficient if the quality is questionable. Similarly high quality information is not helpful if it is not relevant to your business plan. Finally, logical structuring is imperative. Having the right information of good quality is of little value if the reader cannot understand how it all fits together.

Writing (35)
How your plan is written affects the reader?s understanding and impression of professionalism and is therefore considered in your marking. A good business plan will meet high standards in English. Considerations include comprehensibility, appropriate style (e.g. convincing language), tone and register (you should aim at a neutral tone avoid colloquial and excessively formal English). I will consider grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary and spelling.

Presentation (15)
The presentation of the business plan refers to the professional appearance of the plan and its user friendliness. Obviously a business plan of poor quality judged by its contents cannot be improved by brilliant packaging. On the other hand, all else being equal, a better packaged and user-friendly business plan will be better received.

Your final mark will be a global score considering the above criteria. Essentially your plan is evaluated on its contents and then will be adjusted upwards or downwards by considering the presentation and how well it is written.
