Die Sprachschule Mandarin Rocks wurde 2001 in Shanghai, China gegründet. Die Chinesischschule MandarinRocks liegt auf drei Etagen einer eleganten, klassischen Villa im Shanghai-Stil, die im Zentrum von Shanghei liegt und leicht per U-Bahn oder Bus erreichbar ist. Nanjing Rd (Chinas beliebteste Einkaufsstraße), der Volksplatz (auf dem die städtische Regierung Shanghais sitzt), der historische Tempel Jing'an (der größte Tempel in der Innenstadt), der städtische Skulpturenpark (größter Park in der Innenstadt) und Tongren Rd (beliebte Kneipengegend) liegen nur wenige Minuten Fußweg von der Schule entfernt.

HSK Exam Preparation Course 2011 (Lektionen pro Woche: 20)
HSK ist für Schüler geeignet, die an einer chinesischen Universität studieren möchten. Damit ist das Oberstufenniveau nachzuweisen. Es ist die einzige Mandarin-Prüfung, die von der chinesischen Regierung anerkannt ist. Im HSK-Vorbereitungskurs können die Schüler der Mittel- oder Oberstufe ihre Prüfungsergebnisse verbessern. Täglich finden vier Unterrichtseinheiten statt, in denen Grammatik, Vokabular, Hörverständnis und Lesevermögen geübt wird, welche für ein gutes Testergebnis notwendig sind. Probetests werden jede Woche geschrieben und vom Lehrer korrigiert. Die Schule hilft den Schülern bei der Anmeldung für die HSK-Prüfung.

Study-Internship
Sprachkurs-Praktikumsprogramm, in dem der Erwerb der chinesischen Sprache mit der Arbeitserfahrung in einem chinesischen oder multinationalen Unternehmen, das in China tätig ist, kombiniert wird. Dieses Programm bietet Ihnen die Möglichkeit, Arbeitserfahrung in multinationalen Unternehmen zu sammeln und einen Einblick in chinesische Unternehmen und die Gesellschaft zu gewinnen. Das Programm besteht aus 2 Teilen: mindestens 4-wöchiger Chinesisch-Intensivkurs und 4 bis 12 Wochen Praktikum. Die meisten Praktikanten arbeiten in wirtschaftliche Entwicklung, Forschung, Personalabteilung oder Marketing. Die Praktikumsstellen (4-12 Wochen) sind unbezahlt. Es ist möglich, sein Praktikum zu verlängern, wenn das Unternehmen einverstanden ist.

Wenn es Dein Verstand hergeben sollte, dann nehme an den Kursen teil. Natürlich nur, wenn es Dein Gehalt als wanderner Zimmermannsgeselle in China erlaubt. Nach Bestehen des Kurses hast Du bessere Berufschancen. Dann reicht es auch für einige Gucci-Schuhe für die Freundin.

I really can’t recommend this school! I was deeply disappointed by Mandarin Rocks. Don’t trust their website, there are a lot of lies up there. I booked 6 weeks of private lessons in order to prepare for the HSK test this fall (2011). This is what happened to me and how I experienced the school and its accommodation:
SCHOOL
- A few days before my trip, the school informed me that the school venue had changed due to some renovation work on the original place. I got a new address and didn’t think much of it at that time. When I arrived the first day, I realized that the ‘school’ was just a room in an old building. It was nothing like the pictures I saw on the web. On the website, they state that the school is in an elegant, classic Shanghai style townhouse. I have never saw this house. All I have seen is a shabby room with no facilities. There was no common lounge, no computers with free internet, no free Wi-Fi, no terraces, balconies or kitchens. It was just the one room with a whiteboard and a desk and chair for both me and my teacher. That was it. They said to me this is because they are renovating the school at the moment. But all I saw for my full stay was just this one room and nothing else.
- There were no other students in the building. I was really alone there. For me, that was one of the worst things, since I was really looking forward to meeting other people from different countries, hang out with them and get to know each other. But I was really the only one in the ‘school’ there for the whole time of my 6 weeks stay. When I asked my teacher, he said I was the only student at the moment.
- Because I was the only one, there were no school activities whatsoever. I had to plan everything by myself and discover the city totally on my own. Fortunately, I already spoke a little bit of Chinese and I know Asian cities well from prior experiences. Otherwise, I would have felt totally lost and really abandoned from the ‘school’.
- After 3 weeks, I suddenly stood in front of closed doors one Monday. I tried to contact my teacher, but his cell was off. I tried to contact the guy who sold me the package at the ‘school’, but couldn’t reach him either. The next day, I again went to the ‘school’, only to sit in front of closed doors again. I wrote the school a mail and they contacted me back saying my teacher got family problems and couldn’t teach this week. I answered them that I want a refund for the lost lessons this week and then continue next week with the lessons. And that was the LAST time I heard anything from them again. They literally just DISAPPEARED WITH MY MONEY! I had no lessons afterwards, the cells remained switched off and no one answered my mails anymore. THE SCHOOL REMAINED CLOSED! I went back there to check it on some mornings, but I never ever met anyone there. I even thought they might have filed for bankruptcy, because I really didn’t hear anything anymore. So I LOST FULL 3 WEEKS OF PRIVATE LESSONS WORTH ABOUT 1450 DOLLARS AND NEVER GOT A REFUND! After some time, when I realized that the situation wouldn’t change, I just started learning by myself in my room, but that’s not how you imagine your language trip!
ROOM
- The room looked nothing like the pictures. Don’t be fooled by the pictures you see on their website! It was a very small room and the furniture was already quite old and used. The sofa for example had stains all over it and also some cigarette wholes (I am a non-smoker).
- When I arrived at my apartment (I took the private studio apartment), it was very dirty. Since there were no cleaning utensils in the room, first thing I had to do after a twenty hours trip was to head out and get some. It took me about two to three hours to clean the place up. The bed sheets were dirty, the floor was covered with dust and in the corners I could find balls of hair.
- I also had to buy a new water cooker, since the pans, pots and other things in the kitchen were just too old and dirty to use (the water cooker was made of plastic and already started going moldy).
- During my whole stay there, I never ever saw a cleaning lady. I always cleaned the room by myself, although the brochure states, that a cleaning leady will come around once a week. This is just a lie, there was no room cleaning service whatsoever.
- In the brochure, it states that water, gas and electricity are provided. The second week I got a water bill from two months earlier stating, that if I didn’t pay it within the next 5 days, they would turn off my hot water. I contacted the school about it, but they neither reacted nor seemed to care. So out of fear that I wouldn’t have any hot water, I paid two water bills during my stay (about 15 dollars, but just so you know).
All I can say after my experience is: DON’T BOOK THERE, LOOK FOR ANOTHER SCHOOL. They will not take care of you and they just lie. THE WHOLE THING IS REALLY A SCAM! HANDS OFF OF MANDARIN ROCKS!
